Fighting Back Against Family Responsibilities Discrimination
Have you been discriminated against in the workplace because you’re a family caregiver? If you have, you’re not alone. Workplace discrimination against family caregivers is on the rise. In November 2007, the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California (Worklife Law), which tracks workplace discrimination lawsuits, reported a 400 percent rise in the last decade. Worklife Law’s Family Responsibilities Discrimination (FRD) Fact Sheet outlines examples of FRD and what you can do to help yourself. Read the Fact Sheet at www.worklifelaw.org/FactSheet.html.
In 2007, the EEOC issued guidelines to compensate for the absence of specific FRD laws at the state and federal levels. Read the guidelines at http://eeoc.gov/policy/docs/caregiving.html . A supplement to these guidelines, “Employer Best Practices for Workers with Caregiving Responsibilities,” can be found at www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/caregiver-best-practices.html.
The National Partnership for Women & Families is a leader in the fight to provide family caregivers with the workplace supports they need. Read the Partnership’s latest fact sheet at www.nationalpartnership.org/site/DocServer/W_F_Building_Better_Workplaces_for_Caregivers_Nov._2010.pdf?docID=7641.
